The Songs of a Lost Child - Animated Short

An animation built around poems and drawings by Chika Shimizu, with music by The Books.

Animated by Solomon Weisbard

About the book:: Writer and illustrator Chika Shimizu’s book of drawings and poetry in both Japanese and English walks the thin line between the world of children and adults. Encapsulating friendship, happiness, longing, loneliness and love in ways that readers of all ages and both languages can understand. Shimizu’s sense of whimsy and the deceptive simplicity of her restrained black and white illustrations both disguise and reinforce a greater purpose- culling the depths of the human heart. “This.” is not traditional storytelling, but it still has the powerful quality of narrative to transcend the divide between fact and fiction to capture something more extraordinary and more truthful. “This.” is the kind of show that makes you look at the stranger sitting next to you a little differently. We see how life is funny and sad at the same time. “This.” is the reason we seek connections to people around us. “This.” reminds us that we are not alone. - Joy Shan, Yale Daily News
